Terminal Guide

Getting there

Hobart Airport is located just 17 kilometres or a 15 minute drive from the city of Hobart. A dual-lane highway connects the Airport to the city.

You can get to and from the airport via shuttle bus, taxis, rental car or your own vehicle.

Standard Terminal Opening Hours

We open at: 4am

We close at: 10:30pm

We are, however, flexible and we adjust our opening hours to suit our arriving and departing flights where necessary.

Please note, we are unable to accommodate travelers overnight in the terminal.


Check-in, arrivals and baggage claim

Check-in desks for all airlines and self-service kiosks are located in the middle of the terminal building. 

Virgin Australia and Tigerair flights arrive at the northern end of the terminal. Qantas and Jetstar arrive at the southern end. Please refer to the map below and the Arrivals page to confirm your airline baggage carousel. Information screens can also be found inside the terminal building. 


Oversized baggage

If you have oversized baggage, we recommend you contact your airline and ask them about requirements before you travel. Once at the airport ask the friendly staff at your airline’s information desk and they’ll help you.

Gates 4 and 6 – Extended Departures

To meet additional demand, a number of interim changes have been made to the old southern arrivals hall (previously Qantas/Jetstar arrivals).

Changes to how you currently arrive, depart and meet your loved ones include:

– An extended departure area (to include the old southern arrivals hall), allowing for additional space, extra seating and more toilets.

– The introduction of Gate 6, as part of the extended departure area, and the use of departures Gate 4 for arrivals. Access to these gates is through the security check point.

– For all passengers arriving with checked baggage this will be collected from one of the carousels in the new arrivals hall (near Gate 1).

– Three arrival points for those meeting family and friends, either Gate 4 or 6 (through security) or Gate 1 (the new arrivals hall).

For those collecting loved ones: You can check our website or the flight information screens inside the terminal, to determine if the flight you are meeting will arrive through Gate 1, Gate 4 or Gate 6.

Signage and maps have been placed throughout the terminal to provide directional assistance.


Toilet & parenting facilities

There are multiple bathroom amenities located within the terminal building. Please follow the signs to locate those nearest to you. Want to freshen up? Personal hygiene and basic medicinal products are available from ‘Runway News’ newsagency in the Departure Lounge.

For Gate 4 or 6 arrivals: head into the departure lounge (near the retail shops) or use the facilities in the Gate 1 arrivals hall. (See map).

You can check our website to determine if your flight will arrive through Gate 1, Gate 4 or Gate 6.


Bicycle Workshop

Our Bicycle Workshop is a bicycle service station unit that allows you to assemble, disassemble, inflate tyres via the foot pump and do minor maintenance on your bike.

This workshop is located within the Main car park just beyond the Valet parking office building and near Automatic Payment Machine #3/604.

To get there from the Arrivals Hall exit the terminal and turn left, walk along the outside footpath and cross at the pedestrian crossing into the Main car park (the workshop is signposted).

If you need directions please ask our customer service staff at the Valet office.

The facility is undercover, empty boxes are to be returned to the Oversized Baggage area or disposed of thoughtfully.

These services are not available at Hobart Airport.

Accessibility

At Hobart Airport, we want to make your experience as comfortable as possible. The terminal building features a range of facilities and support services to assist you.


Wheelchairs

If you need a wheelchair to help you out to your plane, or around the airport, please contact the airline you’re travelling with. It’s better to give them advance notice about the help you need, so they’re ready to help you.


Disabled parking

If you have a disabled parking permit on your vehicle we’ve saved you the most convenient parking spots in the drop-off and pick-up lane. For security reasons someone needs to stay with the car at all times.

If you prefer to come in to the terminal to say your hellos or goodbyes, and you have a disabled parking permit, use one of the dedicated disabled car spaces in the main car park. These are located close to the terminal with convenient access for passengers with disabilities.

If you need extra help for people with significant mobility issues, please contact our kerbside security staff on 0407 780 083 before arriving at the airport.

If you are a passenger and require assistance inside the terminal building or with getting onto your flight please contact your airline.


Toilet facilities at the Airport

Wheelchair accessible toilets are located inside the terminal building – follow the signs for the toilets outside the security clearance area or in Departures.

For Gate 4 and 6 arrivals: head into the departure lounge (near the retail shops) or use the facilities in the Gate 1 arrivals hall. (See map).

Audio loop for hearing devices

For our visitors with hearing aids, the terminal building is equipped with an audio loop that helps you to hear what’s going on without the background noise.

Safety & Security

Hobart Airport is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all visitors. We’ve worked closely with our security teams to ensure your experience is both enjoyable and hassle-free.
As a result, we have the fastest security screening rate in Australia.

Additional Aviation Security

*UPDATE*

The additional security measures implemented at Australia’s major airports have now been adjusted.

What does this mean for you?

  • You should still expect increased security measures, but we anticipate fewer delays.
  • We have returned to normal travel times for check-in, as recommended by your airline.

There are no changes to what can and cannot be carried on-board the aircraft.


Security screening

Australian Government regulations specify that everyone, including passengers, aircrew and airport workers, must go through a security screening point at Hobart Airport’s Domestic and International Terminals before boarding a flight or moving into secure areas of terminals.

Our focus is to provide efficient screening processes that show respect for all passengers, while at the same time assuring the highest level of security standards are maintained.

You are responsible for keeping track of your own possessions when you pass through the screening point. We suggest that you put your valuables, such as wallet, passport, jewellery and camera, in your bag before arriving at the screening point.

If walk-through detector alarms go off during screening passengers will be subject to further screening before being cleared for travel. This may include the removal of various outer garments, including headwear or footwear, which can have a metal brace in the instep that activates alarms. If alarms continue to sound passengers may be asked to undergo a physical search.

If, for religious or other personal reasons, passengers do not wish to undergo these screening processes in public, they may request that screening occurs in a private room.

Explosive Trace Detection machines are in use at Hobart Airport. Passengers and baggage may be tested at check-ins or screening points at any time.


Passengers with special needs

Passengers or visitors with special needs may require a private security screening. This may take more time and should be factored into planning ahead of your flight. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with one of our friendly screening officers.

Medical implants

Medical implants may be affected by the security screening procedure. Please inform the screening officer if you have any implants (such as pacemakers or cochlear implants) to request a separate screening.

Artificial limbs/prostheses

If you have artificial limbs/prostheses, please inform the screening officer to request a separate screening.

Walking aids

Walking aids must be screened and as such may require X-Ray or Explosive Trace Detection. There are chairs and walking aids available at the screening point for you to use whilst your walking aids are screened.

Additional assistance and wheelchairs

Our staff are very experienced in moving passengers who require additional assistance and will take passengers directly to the security screening point. Passengers in wheel chairs will be required to undergo screening by way of a pat-down search by a security officer of the same sex.


Passenger drop-off

Australian Government security requirements dictate that vehicles dropping off passengers at the front of the terminal must be attended at all times. The driver of the vehicle must remain with their vehicle.

Any vehicle left unattended will be subject to an immediate fine and may be towed away.

Visitors to the Airport are encouraged to use the car parking options available if they wish to enter the terminal to greet or farewell passengers.  The car park also has a 10 minute free period if you wish to take advantage of this option.


Closed Circuit Television Monitoring (CCTV)

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) operates at Hobart Airport as part of an ongoing Aviation Security initiative, targeting crime and aviation security related issues.

CCTV significantly increases the ability to monitor areas of the airport and immediately act on any unlawful activity. This increases the safety of passengers, visitors to the airport and employees.


Unattended baggage

Baggage must never be left unattended in public areas. All such baggage will be treated as suspicious. All belongings should be clearly tagged with your contact details and your destination displayed on the outside. Airlines supply luggage tags for this purpose and are available at the check-in counters. Ensure that you pack your own bags and never take items on board an aircraft for other people.


Security related threats

Passengers and airport visitors are warned that all threats and comments made about the carrying of weapons or explosives – whether intended as a joke or not – will be taken seriously and may result in refusal of carriage onto the flight and prosecution by law enforcement.


Dangerous goods

Please ensure you do not carry any flammable liquids, gases or other dangerous goods with you or in your luggage.

These items are not permitted on the aircraft as they are capable of posing a significant risk to health and safety when transported by air. Such items will be removed by security staff when detected.

Prohibited items in hand luggage

Bladed implements such as knives and tools are prohibited in hand luggage.  These items should instead be packed in your checked luggage for air travel. For an up to date list of prohibited items please follow the link below:

What you cannot take onboard

If these items are not surrendered at the screening points the passenger is in breach of Australian Government regulations and the airline will not allow the passenger to travel. Please ensure no items are in your hand luggage before reaching the screening point otherwise detection of these items at screening points will require you to surrender these.

Biosecurity

Tasmania is renowned for its pristine wilderness and rugged beauty. This is, in part, due to the strict Biosecurity regulations enforced by Biosecurity Tasmania. 

Many industries including agriculture, tourism and conservation rely on the work of Biosecurity Tasmania to ensure our island state remains bug and pest-free.

How can you help?

When disembarking an aircraft at Hobart Airport, you will be asked to dispose of or declare any goods that are not permitted in Tasmania. These items should be placed in the biosecurity bins located inside the terminal building. You will be greeted by a friendly Biosecurity Tasmania officer and detector dog who will inspect all hand and checked luggage.

Travel with Animals

If you are traveling on a commercial flight with animals, please arrange prior transportation with the airline you are travelling with. Both Qantas and Virgin aircraft offer this service.

Please be advised that there may be biosecurity import requirements relating to bringing pets, wildlife and livestock into Tasmania. The Biosecurity Tasmania website provides further information on importing all animals into Tasmania.

Lost Baggage

Delayed or lost baggage? From time to time, bags can get mixed up at your last point of departure – don’t worry, we’re here to help. All of our airline partners have measures in place to ensure your bags are returned to you as soon as possible.

We want all our guests to be as comfortable as possible. That’s why we’ve collaborated with Autism Tasmania to create our visual Social Story journeys. Our stories are designed to assist people to understand how an airport works.

We created the videos below to help you prepare for and navigate your trip through Hobart Airport.

Please be aware that there are works occurring in our departures lounge.

This means that there is additional noise, hoarding (blocked off areas), and that some things may not be identical to what you see below.

These works are due for completion at the beginning of December. Once work is finished, we will update the videos to reflect our shiny new space!

Important notes:

  • Listen to the man’s voice on the video for more information.
  • Airports are busy and often noisy places. We filmed this lady walking alone during quiet times at the airport, so your experience may be different to hers.
  • You may like to come prepared with tools to help you feel calm, such as noise-canceling headphones or something to keep you busy (a good book, laptop or tablet).
  • For security, you do need to keep your carry-on baggage and belongings with you at all times (even if you get up from your seat to go to the toilet or browse a shop).
  • There may be potential sensory stressors, such as airline announcements overhead, coffee machines and hand dryers in bathrooms.
  • You will often need to be patient while travelling, including waiting in queues for airline check-in, food and drinks, toilets and of course to board your plane.
  • When walking to and from your plane you will be walking with others travelling with you. You are all going the same way and airline staff are there to help you through.

Arrivals Journeys

There are several arrival gates that you may enter the terminal from. Every area has signs to lead you out of the terminal and towards where you can collect your checked bags.

Airports can be busy places but you can use the signs and arrows to make finding your way simple.

Additional Security Screening Journeys

Explosive Trace Detection Test (ETD)

Our contracted security staff may check for dangerous goods, sharp objects, metals, explosives or flammable materials. This is standard practice Australia wide and selection is randomised.

 

Pat Down Search

In special circumstances you may not be able to go through the metal detector. (Such as medical implants or wheelchairs). If this is the case a ‘pat down’ search may be required.

This search may also be required if staff are unable to find a cause for the metal detector alarm sounding. A private area is available, and the search will always be conducted by a staff member who is of the same gender as you.

 

Important notes:
If the metal detector alarm does sound, please don’t worry. It could be as simple as a belt buckle, necklace or shoes. The staff will help you to identify the object setting off the detector which will be safely placed in a tray to go through screening with your other belongings.
