The Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (Hobart Airport) has prepared a draft Major Development Plan (MDP) for a new Department of Health production kitchen located on the corner of Bracken Street and Grueber Avenue, Cambridge, Tasmania. The new production kitchen will provide meals for Southern Tasmanian hospitals, a range of age care facilities and additional private companies, as is now being provided by the current facility.

Overview of the proposal:

• Construction of a new Production kitchen facility including a commercial kitchen, ancillary administrative office space and on-site car parking.
• Design of the facility includes future provisioning for expansion of the Production Kitchen and Car Park area, with space allocation identified on the Project site.

Further context:

The proposed Production Kitchen is required to replace the existing kitchen facility, currently located at Hobart Airport at the Northern end of the airport passenger terminal building directly adjacent to the airside boundary. This area is no longer deemed appropriate for a food production facility which does not require airside access and is better suited to possible future terminal development and associated activities. Construction of the new Production Kitchen at the proposed location in the aviation support precinct at Hobart Airport is considered to be appropriate as the Hobart Airport Master Plan 2022 lists Food services as permissible land use within this land use zone. This proposal will not conflict with the surrounding land uses and will support economic and employment development in Tasmania, throughout the construction and with Tasmanian Department of Health staff working at the production kitchen.

The MDP is available for public viewing for a period of 20 business days between 16 July 2025 to 14 August 2025 (the consultation period).
